I'm in the process of building the set for my animation and i would like to have some old wooden floorboards on as the floor. Any idea how i could create this effect??

Here are a few ways:
You can make or buy planks out of balsa or other wood, stain them with a few different shades and glue them down.
You can take a sheet of balsa, give it a light overall stain and score grooves in it, then custom stain individual strips.
You can take a photograph, or create an image in photoshop, of floorboards, print it out, then glue it onto your floor surface. For added detail, you can use a razor to to score along the different plank lines. For more depth you can mount it on foamcore and do the scoring.
You can take foamcore, paint it up like wood flooring, then score the planks with your knife.
There are more ways, I'm sure. Whichever way you choose, if you're going to have your puppets standing on the floor and need to drill tiedown holes, make sure you have appropriately colored bits of clay to fill in the holes. For heavy duty animating, I think I'd go with a more durable wood. Foamcore and balsa can be kind of squishy.
