I was painting a small board that I am planing to use as a road streching away into the distance, and I came across an old toothbrush in the place I was painting it. The toothbrush gave excellence coverage and colour consistency.

I used to use a toothbrush like a coarse airbrush, dipping it it paint then drawing my thumb back over the bristles to spray dots of paint. It was great for sea spray in a painting I did of a ship. I never tried it for brushing on paint. I would have thought it would be awkward to use, with the bristles at a right angle to the handle. But trying things that are different, or finding uses for what you've got, are both good!
